I think this is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Flying, heights, a reasonable amount of risk… Anyone know of any job openings??

Jersey in autumn. October 24, 2008

Last Saturday I was very glad to be home for Skip’s bachelor party.
We started at Rob and Carrie’s, in Newark, playing poker, pool and bowling. We then took the train into NYC and made our way to the Village. Our first stop was the Russian and Turkish Baths. (I am certainly going to make another visit here.) They have a sauna, stream room, ice cold pool, aroma therapy steam room and my favorite – the Russian room. The Russian room is a rock-walled room that has a hot, very steamy, stone furnaced offering plenty of radiant heat. When the heat starts to get unbearable, you take a bucket, fill it with ice cold water and dump it over your head. Sounds crazy, but feels amazing! I also got a Platza, which is basically where you lay down in the Russian room and get scrubbed (more like beat) with a broom of oak leaves soaked in olive oil soap. Post beating, all your pores and open and you feel totally cleansed – to finish it off, you walk out of the room and jump in the ice cold pool that slams your pores shut. And when you cant take the chilly water anymore you get out and are promptly wrapped in towels. What a great experience!
Once we were all clean the next stop was dinner. Also located in the Village, Prune, had an outstanding meal prepared for us. Appetizers included bone marrow, sweet breads and lobster claws. My entree was a sweet Langoustine Boil with sausage, potatoes and corn. The service was on par with the food - impeccable. Probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had. (Not counting mom’s cooking obviously.)
We rounded out the evening strolling the lower east side enjoying cigars and looking like tourists with our backpacks.
Cheers!

The octopus was about 8′ – 9′
Makes you realize that you’re not at the top of the food chain.
Little Mary’s Rock October 1, 2008

Some shots from the best weekend I’ve had in a while. Sunday we dove a pinnacle that has never been dove. We called it Little Mary’s Rock, since it near Mary’s Rock. (oddly enough) It was amazing. The top was out of the water then it shot down to 60′ to a small ledge then sloped off to 100′. I could see down to about 130′ until it went into the abyss.
This is a shot of Dave while we were at 85′. Because the water was so clear, it was surprisingly light at depth.
Ran into an 8′ octopus that wanted my camera at 64′.
China Rock fish (in the middle) Flanked by an anemone and some sea star looking thing.
I have to fix that annoying waterline across the top of the photos… I’ve attached a wide angle lens to my housing, they advertise it as a “wet lens.” Problem is, it’s not completely wet sometimes. :/
And I’m still tying to figure out the best way to upload video. I got some really cool stuff on Sunday.
Cheers!
Fall Diving September 23, 2008

Spent a gorgeous day in Seward, AK yesterday. Seward is a town about 2.5 hours south of Anchorage right on Resurrection Bay – our dive destination. We dove an area called Boulder City, the viz (how far you can see) was +50 feet (which is great for up here), water temp was a warm 51F with sunshine and calm seas. My goal today was to complete a mapping project of the area. Essentially, I was recording depths, distances, bearings and features. Now I need to put it all together in an understandable format. My team consisted of four divers – Paul and Robin, and Sean and myself. Together we got a pretty good handle on the area. The picture (of Paul and Robin) was taken right before entering a swim-through. (a rock outcropping that fell onto another, creating an tunnel-like formation.) The entrance was in 60′ of water and the other side at 85′. It then dropped off to 130′ – we didn’t venture there. Both dives were a success, I stayed dry and warm. Can’t wait to do it again this Saturday!! (and hopefully sunday)

Trying to figure out how to upload a video from the dive, so stay tuned…
Cheers!
Rock and Ice! September 18, 2008

Ice climbing!!! Rock Climbing!!! That is what I love about AK – September ice climbing. We got absolutely soaked but it was completely worth it. It misted on us all day then started raining as we finished up climbing. That was two weekends ago, last weekend was rock climbing. Ben (my roommate) and I went rock climbing off the highway. Hopefully Scuba diving in Seward, AK will be this weekend.
Cheers!
